 TYPES OF GENRES




There are different types of genres, the 12 basic genres are:

ROMANCE:

These romantic stories are about a romantic relationship between two people. They are characterized by sensual tension, desire and idealism. The author keeps the two apart for most of the novel, but they do eventually end up together.



SCI-FI:

This genre incorporates any story set in the future, the past or other dimensions. The story features scientific ideas and advanced technological concepts.



FANTASY:

These stories deal with kingdoms as opposed to sci-fi, which deals with universe.



THRILLER:

A character in jeopardy dominates these stories. This genre involves pursuit and escape. It is filled with cliffhangers and there are one or more 'dark' characters that the protagonist must escape from fight against or best in the story.



HORROR:

These are high-pitched scary stories involving pursuit and escape. The protagonist must overcome supernatural or demonic begins, including ghost, monsters, vampires and zombies.



CRIME:

These are also known as 'whodunnits'. The central issue is a question that must be answered, an identity revealed, a crime solved. This novel is characterized by clues leading to rising tension as the answer to the mystery is approached.



WESTERNS:

These books are specifically set in the old American west. plotlines include survival, romance and adventures with characters of the time.



ACTION:

An action is similar to adventure and the protagonist usually takes a risky turn which leads to desperate situation.



COMEDY:

Comedy is a story intended to amuse the audience, it is a very open genre and thus crosses over with many other genres on a frequent basis.





ANIMATION:

Although animation is listed under 'genres' and is classified as a genre by many film critics and streaming services.



DRAMA:

Within film, television and radio, Drama is a genre of narrative friction intended to be more serious then humorous in tone, focusing on in depth development of realistic characters who must deal with realistic emotional struggles.
