Genre: Thriller
THRILLER CONVENTIONS:
The opening of jaws is often cited as one of the most effective in cinema history because it relies on what the audience cant see to build terror through sound, lighting and camera work.
SOUND: The most famous element is non-diegetic music by john Williams. It starts with a low pulsating two note rhythm that mimics a heartbeat or a predators steady approach. As the shark gets closer, the tempo increases. This is layered over diegetic sounds like the rhythmic splashing of water and the distant, muffled sounds of the party on shore as it emphasis chrissies isolation.
MISE-EN-SCÈNE: The setting is a dark, vast and murky ocean at night. By placing the character in deep water where she cannot touch the ground, The film creates a sense of helplessness. The contrast between the flickering campfire on the beach and the black, cold water highlights her vulnerability.
LIGHTING: The lighting is low-key and chiaroscuro using the moonlight to glint off the surface of the water whike everything beneath remains pitch black. This visual "black hole" under the surface forces the audiences imagination to fill in the gaps, making the fear of the unknown much more potent.
CAMERA WORK: Spielberg uses a point of view shot from the sharks perspective. The camera moves smoothly through tge seaweed and upward toward the girl kicking legs. This predator vision puts the audience in the position of the hunter, creating a disturbing sense of complicity and dread. Close-ups of chrissies face show her transition from playful joy to sheer, panicked confusion as she is jerked violently across the water by an invisible force.
